The Roots and Deviants of Reality cracked "CMJ's Top 5 Most Added List" this week.I know who the Roots are but i had never heard of this hip hop group "Deviants of Reality" so i did some research and this is what i found out:
Deviants of Reality is an unsigned Hip Hop group based out of Red Bank, N.J (the home town of movie Director Kevin Smith- Clerks 2, and Jay and Silent Bob). Their Debut album "The Art of Mind Travel" was released and distributed by ZYX Music / Germany in Europe during the Spring of 2004 and has sold over 8000 copies to date.
Their CD "The Art of Mind Travel" is one of CD Baby's best selling hip hop CDs (in the vein of Kanye West,and Mos Def). They also were featured on iTunes mix tape Vol.2,and Vol.3 along side De La Soul and Jean Grae.
Their new album "Love,Sex,and Situtuation" due to be released this fall of 2006 has already been licensed by video game giant Capcom for the game Final Fight Streetwise. MTV has also licensed "Deviant" instrumentals from their new album "Love,Sex, and Situtation" for the TV shows "Yo Mama" and "Wild n Out". The group has been described as a throwback to the golden era of hip hop."This is my style of hip hop-classic style hip hop with thought provoking lyrics and pumping beats. These guys remind me of the old school... Smooth vybes with Outkast clever lyrics" (CMJ NEW MUSIC JOUNRNAL).CMJ also featured the Deviants of Reality song "Get Up" on their "Down This" section on their online magazine.
The group has performed all over the northeast opening for such major label acts like the Roots, G-Love and the Special Sauce, Lyrics Born and Slum Village.Deviants of Reality give credit to these artist and groups that have heavily influenced their style :Eryka Badu, De La Soul, The Roots, Tricky, Massive Attack, Gang Starr, OutKast, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Krs One, Prince, Common, Prince Paul, A Tribe Called Quest, Earth Wind and Fire, Al Green, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Rick James, George Clinton and Funkadelic.
